Flame — Tabletop Sculpture

Flame is an upright abstract form built from a single continuous upward movement. A narrow, sharply drawn tip rises from a heavy, settled base, opening on the way into soft waves and enclosing two luminous voids — one high in the body, the other just above the surface it stands on. The material carries a warm ivory tone and a matte, faintly textured finish that holds light rather than reflecting it: the concave faces brighten almost to gold while the edges stay in shadow.

The sculpture is handmade — carved, shaped and sanded in stages, with no serial production involved. Tool marks across the surface, the fine porosity of the material and natural shifts in tone are deliberately preserved, so no two pieces are identical — the mark of handcrafted work rather than a deviation from a pattern. The form looks best displayed on its own in a spot with raked light: on a sideboard, console, mantelpiece or study shelf, where its vertical rhythm gives the room a calm sense of movement.
