Coil — Tabletop Sculpture

Coil is a spiral held in a single gesture — a form that begins in a finely tapered tail, rises through a wide arc and turns inward, leaving a clean circle of light at its centre. The volume touches the surface along only a narrow strip of its base, so it reads as caught mid-rotation rather than simply placed. The pale, almost cream-coloured wood, with its soft undulating grain, is sanded to a matte smoothness — warm to the touch, gathering light gently, with no gloss and no sharp edges.

The sculpture is handmade from a single piece of wood, cut, shaped and sanded in stages, with no serial production involved. The grain pattern, the way it travels through the arc and the subtle shifts in tone are a record of one specific tree, so every piece remains unique — a natural quality of handcrafted work. The form stands well on its own: on a sideboard, a low shelf, a dining table or a desk, where its curve softens the geometry of the room and draws the eye without raising its voice.
