Closeness — Standing Sculpture

Closeness is a pair of tall, narrow columns carved in white stone and set side by side, separated only by a thin seam of shadow. The forms are nearly mirrored but not identical: one stands slightly taller, the other is cut more deeply at the shoulders — so they read as two figures standing shoulder to shoulder, though the sculpture never becomes literal. The surface combines smoothly polished, cool planes with sharp, angular chisel cuts, while faint rust-coloured veining and the stone's natural warm blush bring life to the matte white.

The sculpture is handmade from a single block of stone, cut, shaped and sanded in stages, with no serial production involved. The pattern of the veining, its placement and the final shape of every fracture in the surface come from that one specific block, which makes each piece unique — a natural quality of handcrafted work. The form needs a quiet background and space to be walked around: on a plinth, a console, a wide window ledge or in a niche, with raked light to bring out the gap between the two columns.
