Figure — Standing Sculpture

Figure is a slender, elongated human silhouette set on a thin dark base and reduced to the rhythm of the body alone: a gentle twist at the hips, tilted shoulders, a head inclined slightly to the side. The anatomy is only suggested, without facial features or detail — which keeps the form universal, more a gesture than a portrait. The entire surface is raw and deeply fissured, in a rich graphite-black tone with lighter abrasions across the raised areas, so the sculpture looks as though it had been lifted from the earth and marked by time.

The sculpture is handmade — modelled, cast and patinated in stages, with no serial production involved. The surface texture, the pattern of the abrasions and the depth of the patina all come from direct work of the hand and tool, so no piece ever repeats another exactly — a natural quality of handcrafted work. The narrow vertical silhouette needs a pale background and space around it: it works well on a console, a sideboard, a plinth or a study shelf, and in raked light its rough surface takes on a strong sculptural relief.
