Signs — Sculptural Diptych

Signs is a pair of freestanding volumes forming a single composition: the first, with an irregular stepped outline, is cut by a narrow vertical incision; the second, calm and rectangular, carries a full raised disc on its face. Placed side by side they begin to converse — the slit and the disc read as two opposing gestures, void and mass, pause and accent. The surface has a sandy, lightly granular texture in a warm ivory tone, which in raked light produces distinct, softly blurred shadows and in diffused light becomes smooth and almost uniform.

Both forms are handmade — modelled, smoothed and finished individually, with no serial production involved. The texture, the depth of the incision and the slight deviations along the edges all come from the work of the hand, which makes every set unique — a natural quality of handcrafted work. The diptych can stand together as a close pair or be split between two zones of a room: on a sideboard, a console, the floor beside a window or a wide sill, where daylight will redraw them a little differently every day.
