Sail — Tabletop Sculpture
Details
Sail is a light, open wooden form resting on three slender tapered supports, from which a broad plane rises and curls upward into a soft concave shell. The volume is thin and taut, like fabric filled by wind, yet entirely rigid — that tension between the lightness of the shape and the hardness of the material is the heart of the piece. The voids between the supports draw further shapes of their own, so the sculpture reads differently from every side. The pale, cream-toned wood, with an almost invisible grain, is sanded to a matte smoothness and gathers light warmly, with no gloss and no sharp edges.
The sculpture is handmade from a single piece of wood, cut, shaped and sanded in stages, with no serial production involved. The thickness of the walls, the run of the curve and the faint pattern of the grain come from that one specific piece of timber and from the work of the hand, which makes every sculpture unique — a natural quality of handcrafted work. The form needs space around it and light from the side to draw its shadow: it looks well on a pale tabletop, a sideboard, a desk, a low shelf or a plinth in a minimal interior.
